We must have a unified front against the covid virus and anyone who doesn’t join in is committing treason, and not just against the government but to all of us. I understand that some members of certain groups have had bad experiences with the government, but those same groups have also suffered the most during the pandemic. Those who refuse to get vaccinated or wear masks are also cowards. In war time we describe people who refuse to fight because they don’t want to (as opposed to for moral reasons) as cowards. We thus don’t have the freedom to endanger other people with infection by not following mandates designed to destroy the enemy – the covid virus. We don’t have the freedom to kill other people or to drive recklessly on the road.

Freedoms are only valid if your freedom does not harm other people. There must be stiff penalties for those who refuse.

The right decision is to mandate vaccination for everybody, mandate mask wearing, mandate social distancing, and put in place as many supports as we can to make these mandates as easy as possible for all people. However, unless we have a concerted effort with everybody forced to behave, we cannot even hope to win. For example, the decision to downplay the pandemic promulgated by the Trump administration and many Republicans was clearly wrong. Instead we need dictatorial decision making. We don’t need recommendations from the CDC or the president or any government which change from week to week. Just like a war there are many uncertainties, and the only route toward victory is for a unified attack on the enemy, in this case the virus that is killing so many people. The bottom line is that the vast majority of Americans including scientists like myself are incapable of fully understanding everything about the pandemic. We now have yet another surge in covid infections even though many millions have been vaccinated.

president was too weak and thus too ineffective to halt the pandemic. Even after the most powerful denier lost power the new U.S. instead we not only had the federal government and many state governments not exert dictatorial powers, but even denied the pandemic existed. These countries treated the pandemic like they were at war, and everybody had to do what the government told them to do. The only countries that have had a reasonable outcome so far are those that acted dictatorially such as China, Singapore, and Taiwan. and much of the rest of the world, the pandemic has been badly mismanaged. We are now in the midst of a pandemic that has lasted over a year.
